Why Japanese?

I chose to study Japanese because of my passion for the arts. Last summer, I was an intern at Christie's Auction House, and I had the opportunity to see the art industry from a new perspective. One thing I realized throughout my internship was that even though I'm Korean, I didn't know much about Asian Contemporary Art and how it was doing in the global market. I invested a lot of time researching, and I learned that the Japanese artists were extremely influential in driving the Asian Contemporary Art market. Consequently, it was clear that knowing the Japanese language and culture is necessary when understanding Asian Contemporary Art as a whole.

  2. すごいですね。Your perspective on Japanese and Asian Contemporary Art is super interesting! I never consciously thought about how learning Japanese could help me better understand what I am studying, but I suppose it's not so far-fetched after all. Other than Asian Contemporary Art, what other types of art are you interested in?

    1. I think learning different languages can really help you understand various areas of study! I'm pretty traditional in that I like historical paintings because I enjoy the "act of looking," searching for little hints that the artists have left. I also like Romantic painters like William Turner, because he has a gift for representing chaos as tranquility. For modern art, I like Constantin Brancusi for similar reasons why I like Turner; he is able to represent motion with stillness. Now that I come to think about it, maybe I like artists whose works embody some sort of irony. Contemporary art is something that I can't not love, because I am part of it as much as it is part of my life. I've grown to particularly love works by a Korean contemporary artist named Choi Yeong Geol, because I think he revives the beauty of nature in Korea, which is often overlooked by our generation.

  3. すごい!I didn't know that you were interested in the arts, but in retrospect, you and the arts go hand in hand. It's really fascinating that you were able to be an intern at an art house and then take that experience and use it to grow even more. I hope that learning Japanese will help you with your learning of Asian Contemporary Art!

    1. Yes, I hope so too! I know you are still deciding your major, but I hope you explore various options and find your passion! To be honest, if I didn't come to college in New York City, I don't know if I would've found my passion for the arts. I hope you take advantage of your four years in the city!
